James Walter Stewart Thomson came to St Bees School in 1911, and after a term at Barony House went on to Grindal House, but did not stay very long as he joined a commercial firm in London. He tried to get into the Army at the beginning of the war, and after being twice rejected as being too young, he joined the London Scottish and obtained a commission in the 4th Gordon Highlanders. In 1915 he went out to the Front, where he remained continuously and was killed in action on April 12, whilst in charge of a field battery. He had passed through many perilous times as Bombing Officer, Machine-Gun Officer, and finally Trench Motar Officer.
