I learnt about Mathys Slabbert while doing genealogy, and I believe he was supposedly to have been the one who was to marry my grandmother, however he was killed and my grandfather did the honours instead. Had be not lost his life a whole family would not have existed but a whole new family would have come into being instead. It was the way the war changed lives. Rest in peace Mathys, from a family you do not know.
