Before his enlistment at the beginning of the war, Charles Eli Kyte was a miner at the Pinxton Colliery, Nottinghamshire. He trained with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby) Regiment and was transferred to the Essex Regiment on reaching France. He was a member of his local Primitive Church and Male Voice Choir.
