James was born and lived all his life on the Hilltown in Dundee, Scotland. His widow, Lovina, lived in Leeds temporarily before returning to Dundee for the rest of her life. He had 2 sons, James and Charles who were 6 and 2 at the time of his death. His sacrifice is remembered by his many grand children and great grand children.
