He was born c 1892 in Lee.

In 1911 he was living at 5 Baring Road Lee, Lewisham with his parents Arthur Ulysses and Emily Rose. He had 2 sisters Nora and Marjorie. He was employed as an apprentice to his father who was a general timber veneer merchant.

In 1901 he was living at Farnah, in the parish of St Mildred’s in Lee.
