Arthur was baptised 18 November 1896 at All Saints Church, Peckham. His brother Edwin Robert was also baptised the same day. His parents were Henry and Isabel and the family were living at 3 Lummer Terrace.

His sister was Alice Pell, 49, Nynehead St, New Cross.

He was living at Guildford Street, Greenwich and was an old boy of Stanley Street Council School, Deptford. He was employed at Braby and Co, Deptford.

He was born 30 September 1896 at Peckham. He joined the Royal Navy on the 3 October 1912. His occupation prior to joining the Navy was a drummer tank worker. He was 5ft 2 ½ inches tall. He had hazel eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. He had a scar on his left hand. His character was said to be very good.

In 1911 he was living at 228 Walworth Road, London as a boarder. He was employed as a plumbers apprentice.
