Able Seamen George Winwood J/2550, Royal Navy was killed in action on the 28th August 1914, whilst serving on board HMS Arethusa at the Battle of Heligoland Blight, North Sea. During the battle the ship hit a mine.

George was the son of George Winwood (coal miner) and his wife Annie.

Able Seaman George Winwood was buried at St Saviour Churchyard, Shotton, Co. Durham. The Shotton Colliery Band played at the funeral and a ceremonial firing party was provided by the Northumberland Fusiliers.
