Athelstan Sylvester Kenshole Webb worked for the Fine Art and General Insurance Company Ltd. in the Leicester branch. Known as Jack, he joined the Leicesters on the outbreak of war and after a few months joined the Inns of Court OTC obtaining a commission in the Northumberland Fusiliers. In July 1916 he was sent to France where he was wounded twice and invalided home. In October 1917 he became the youngest staff officer in the British Army. He took part in the Battle of Cambrai and was killed by shell fire while serving as a Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers, Rail Transport 7th Battalion. A letter from his Colonel said he had done most excellent work and was ever cheerful and devoted to his duty. He was 21.
