Alexander Nicol was born in 1894 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, to John S. Nicol, a coal merchant, and Agnes Berwick, of 85 Brisbane Street, Greenock.

Alexander came to the University of Glasgow for a single academic year, 1913-1914, to study Law and won a prize in Mercantile Law. Prior to this he had been a Chartered Accountant with Kidson, Goff and Findlay of Hope Street in Glasgow. He was also a cricketer and played for Glenpark CC in Greenock.

During the war Alexander was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Bn. Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders. He fought in Gallipoli and was killed in action on the 12th July 1915, aged 21.
