Alfred Hale was the son of George Hale and the late Mary Hale. Address, 39, Chalks Road, Bristol.
Alfred Hale was a fireman in the mercantile marine. A fireman on a steam ship is a stoker, one of the black crew.
He was serving on the SS San Zeferino (London). A tanker of 6,430 tons. Built in 1914, it was owned by Eagle Oil Transport Co. Ltd.
On the 26th September 1917 it was on route from Avonmouth to Tampico , ballast. When it was damaged by torpedo fired by German U-boat, UC 33 in St George's Channel. Alfred Hale was one of the three seamen who lost their lives in the attack.
