My great-grandfather Pioneer William John Harris of the 2nd Foreway Coy, Royal Engineers was killed in action by a shell on 12th April 1918 and was buried at Barly French Military Cemetery.  Barly French Military Cemetery contains the graves of 101 French soldiers, 19 soldiers from the United Kingdom and 9 men of the Indian Labour Corp. My great-grandfather  was 35 years old when he was killed in action and served throughout the Boer War.

He was married with four children and previous to the war, was employed at Messrs. Ben Evans & Co., Swansea.

My grandmother always told us that he was such a wonderful father to her and her siblings and was missed by them all. He will always live in our memory and we are so proud of what he did in WW1 and never hesitated in the face of danger.
