Arthur Edward Shrubsole was born in Leicester in 1895, the son of James & Emma Shrubsole & sister to Mary Ellen. He was awarded the Victory medal, the British Medal and the 15 Star. His medal rolls recorded is preserved but it seems his military ones are not; probably amongst the 80% that were destroyed during the bombing of London during WWII. Arthur died at Mazingarbe on 13th April 1917 as this extract from the War Diary shows. The War Diary entry for 13th April 1917 records. MAZINGARBE. At 8.30am 'A' Company commenced work on track and trench through M.3.b. Central (LENS 1/10000). At 7.30pm 'B' Company worked on LONDON ROAD and LOOS – HULLUCH ROAD. At 8.00 pm 'C' Company worked on RAILWAY ALLEY. At 6.00am 'D' Company worked with tunnelling Companies. At 4.05pm MAZINGARBE was shelled by the enemy and a shell burst in 'B' Company's Officers Mess killing 2nd Lt A.E. SHRUBSOLE and wounding Captain C. EVANS. I man was wounded and 4 men were sent to hospital with shell shock.
