I understand that Charles and his brother Thomas both wanted to join the Metropolitan Police but decided to join the Coldstream Guards instead, thinking that they could join the Police after their period of service in the Army. Charles died on 13th August 1914 when the 3rd Battalion landed at Havre, France. He is commemorated on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France and also on the Mells War Memorial near Frome, Somerset
