Son of Anthony Powell McCallum (1868-1947) and Elizabeth Cowley (1868-1900), William Powell McCallum was born at 61 Cedar Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 12th July 1893 the son of a Coachman. On the 8th December 1915, age 22, William enlisted as a Private in the Territorial Army for the duration of the war, joining the 2/2 Loval Scouts, part of the 5th Btn. Gordon Highlanders regiment (Regimental No. 6318 ,Service No. 40873). At the time of his enlistment he was living at 16 Carrickarden Street, Glasgow. He died of his wounds, age 24, in the University War Hospital at Southampton, Hampshire on 26th October 1917. From the date of his death, it would appear that he was most likely mortally wounded during the Third Battle Of Ypres (or Passchendaele as it is better known). He had a younger brother, Thomas Douglas McCallum (1897-1941) who also served in the Great War in the Lowland Brigade RFA, and 2 sisters Emily Eva Cowley McCallum (1885-1970) and Lilian Elizabeth McCallum (1895-1987).
