John was born on the 2 June 1897 at 82 Springfield Road Bridgeton Glasgow. He was the youngest of thirteen children of William Pender & Marion Pender (nee Cook) He was a machine gunner with the Black Watch. His oldest sister was my grandmother Margaret Gilligan Pender and his niece (my mother) was called Marion Cook Wilson. My grandmother missed him greatly.
