Our family hero William Brown Duncan, was born in South Shields and joined 1/7th battalion of Durham Light Infantry at 18 years old. My Nan was his oldest sister and more like a mother to him. She kept a bible belonging Billy near her at all times and she proudly told everyone of her " baby brother" to whom it belonged. A German bullet pierced his uniform and lodged in the bible in his breast pocket. Nana said it was a miracle and we all believed her. Unfortunately after succumbing to gassing Billy returned to England only to die later of his injuries. He is buried in our local Harton Cemetery. His parents were William Brown Duncan and Charlotte. Siblings Agnes (my Nan ), Elizabeth, Emma, Edward and Robert. We will always remember your sacrifice Uncle Billy and thank you for making our country proud .
