Percy Houlgate Hartley worked for the Commercial Union Assurance Company Ltd. as an accountant in the Fire Department in the Liverpool Victoria Section at head office. He was wounded while serving as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Irish Rifles 1st Battalion and died of his wounds in the 75th casualty clearing station in Palestine. His widow Lillian was paid £300 by the company, equal to one year’s salary. He was 39.
