Frank’s Battalion saw action in 1917/18 with the 12th (Eastern) Division at Arras, Cambrai and Amiens and on 8 August 1918 they attacked German positions along the River Ancre, close to Amiens, France. The 7th Norfolks and 9th Essex advanced to their objectives, consolidating a new line from the west of Morlancourt to the Ancre, but the Cambridgeshires on the right were held up by heavy fire from the Sailly Laurette road. The battalion renewed its attack later in the day, assisted by a tank, and achieved its objectives, capturing 316 enemy, 14 machine guns and 10 mortars. Unfortunately, Frank was severely wounded in the right leg and left arm when a mustard gas shell landed close by. He was evacuated to No4 Casualty Clearing Station but died later that day.
