Tavern Brooke Roberts was at St Bees School House 1912-15. He left in order to work at munitions at Messrs. Vickers, at Crayford, as he was too young for the Army. In November 1916 he joined the Artists' Rifles, and in the following March received his commission in the Royal Air Force. He was in training until September 1917, when he left for France. He waited at a Pilots' Pool until September 19th, when he was appointed to a squadron. On September 26th he was sent out on a low-flying mission, and he did not return.
