John had a wife and four children. He was a soldier before the war began but had left the service when his daughter was born in 1907. He also had jobs such as butcher and blacksmiths striker. When war broke out he was recalled. He and and his brother, Leonard, are commemorated in St.Andrew's church Sonning.
