John Oswald Ayres was my husband's grandmother's first husband. He died at Fosse 7 de Bethune. His best friend, John Raynes, was awarded the VC as he attempted to Save John Ayres' life. Although John Raynes was not killed in the war, he died at the young age of just 42. RIP both brave men.
