Richard Lloyd Williams (Lloyd) died in Mendinghem Casualty Clearing Station which became Mendinghem CWGC Cemetery. Only days before he had met his brother, my Grandfather Major Jesse Williams DSO, on the field of battle at Paaschedaele. Lloyd was gassed. He died of his wounds over several days in the Casualty Clearing Station. As a child I was told that on each day he struggled to write a verse of 'Abide With Me' (in Welsh of course) before he died. He was unmarried. My Grandfather survived and returned to marry and have four children including my father. Their brother William Williams kept the family farm at Blae Nant at the far end of Llyn Crafnant in Snowdonia. He died childless and the farm is now the club hut for a mountaineering club.
