It takes the form of an obelisk over 30 metres high that can be seen by ships passing through the Dardanel Historical Information: The Helles Memorial bears over 20,000 names and is both the memorial to the Gallipoli campaign and to men who fell in that campaign and whose graves are unknown or who were lost or buried at sea in Gallipoli waters (other than Australian, New Zealanders and Newfoundlanders who are named on other memorials). Inscribed on it are the names of all the ships that took part in the campaign and the titles of the army formations and units which served on the Peninsula.

"MISSING" IN ACTION AT SUVLA BAY, AUGUST 15TH, 1915, AND PRESUMED TO HAVE BEEN KILLED ON THAT DAY OR TO HAVE DIED OF WOUNDS. AGED 25

Capt. C. B. Isard was the second son of Mr and Mrs Arthur James Isard of Camano Tonbridge. His father who is himself an OT (DB 1873) though he was afterwards at the Ley School, Cambridge, is a solicitor practicing in London, and has for long taken a prominent part in local affairs, and has been Chairman of the Urban District Council. His five sons have all entered the school from Yardley Court, but all except the youngest have like their father completed their school career at Leys School, where their uncle Mr J C Isard was for many years Bursar.

The eldest son A P Isard AMIME (DB 1902-4) a mechanical engineer obtained a commission in the 4th Electrical Light Coy., Kent, (Fortress) RE (TF) , in September, 1914 and was an acting Xaptain from July 1915. The third C V Isard (DB 1907-9) was a medical student and after serving as a dresser in the IMS on a hospital ship in 1915 resumed his medical studies and became a Temporary Surgeon, RN in October 1917. The forth O C Isard (DB 1909-11) obtained an infantry commission in September, 1914, but, after being invalided home from Gallipoli, transferred in February, 1917, as a Temporary Lieutenant to the RG.A., and served with "U" Anti-Aircraft Battery, RG.A., in France. The youngest, J. C. L Isard (D.B. 1915-18), became a Cavalry Officer Cadet as soon as he was old enough to do so in 1918.

Entering the School in September, 1904, C. B. Isard left in July, 1906, to go to the Leys School, and was to have become a solicitor, but had not yet completed his articles when war broke out. He was in the Cadet Corps at the Leys School till 1908, and was in the Inns of Court O.T.C.(TF) from 1908-1912, obtaining certificate A and B When the 10th County of London Battn of the London Regiment was raised to replace the disbanded Paddington Rifles, he received a commission in this Battalion, dated January 1913, and going through his drill courses at Chelsea was promoted Lieutenant July 1913 and Captain August 22nd 1914. In the following month he became Assistant Adjutant. In July 1915 they sailed for Gallipoli and he has become Adjutant of the Battalion. They landed at Suvla Bay and on the evening of August 15th 1915, he took part in an attack on certain Turkish trenches on the hills, but though they successfully drove the Turks out of the position, no supports arrived and they were subsequently compelled to retire. The Battalion had lost very heavily, and Capt Isard was reported "missing" The evidence gradually obtained was very conflicting; but as several men reported that he had been seen to fall in the retirement and as no trace of him was found when the ground was recaptured it was for long hoped that he might be a wounded prisoner. Eventually all hope of this had to be abandoned and his death on or after August 15th 1915 was presumed. He was an extremely keen soldier, and had decided to remain in the Army if he survived the war. Letters show that he was recognized by both officers and men as a most capable and energetic officer, who knew his work and did it

FROM THE ROLL OF HONOUR

Isard was born in 1890. Son of Arthur James and Emily Venning Isard, of "Camano," 54, Quarry Hill Rd., Tonbridge. He came to The Leys in 1906 at the age of 16 and went into North A House. He was a Cadet Lance-Corporal.

On leaving school, Isard joined the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps and trained as a Solicitor. In 1913 he received a commission in the London Regiment.

At the outbreak of war, Houfton was sent to the Dardanelles with his battalion. He was killed in action during the Suvla Bay landings on 15 August 1915. He was aged 25 and had reached the rank of Captain-Adjutant. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, panel numbers 196 and 197.
