On 18 April William was wounded and died the same day. The War Dairy for the day records: “Heavy fighting on Divisional front. No.1 Field Ambulance proceed by route march to Fouquieres and post established. 1 Officer and 6 other ranks. Casualties: 4 other ranks No.1 Field Ambulance wounded.”
