Frank’s Battalion was out of the front line, just south of Arras, engaged in training and daily route marches. The War Diary for the day he was killed matter-of-factly records the circumstances.

“9.6.17. Reveille 3.30am, Parade 5.20. Marched to Monchiet - 6½ miles – arriving at 9am and went into huts. No one fell out on line of march. 1 other rank killed by stray shell.”
