Leonard was discharged from the army as unfit for war service. The report to the Medical Board dated 29 September 1917 states:

“Unfit. Diabetes. Attributable. Origin 2.8.17 France. Due to exposure on ordinary military service. Permanent total incapacity. Will require treatment.”
