Soon after arriving in France in September 1915, Stanley was wounded for the first time. He recovered and returned to his unit. The following June he was again wounded, receiving a gunshot to his face, and returned to his unit three weeks later.

On 15/16 September 1916 his Battalion attacked German positions in the Brickfields at Albert and Stanley was seriously wounded, receiving a gunshot wound to the left arm, fracturing the limb. He was evacuated back to England to Wimborne and then to the Montdore Hospital, Bournemouth where he died later of supervening septic bronchio-pneumonia.
