It seems likely that Charles may have been severely wounded in the battle of St Quentin in March 1918 and evacuated back to England. He was admitted to the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital at Guy’s Cliffe House, Warwickshire. He died there on 22 April.
