Francis Henry James Burton went off to war leaving behind his wife Fanny with four children under nine and another on the way. Fanny had followed Francis from London to the family home in rural Berkshire and was estranged from her family as a result of the marriage. When news of Francis' death came Fanny was left with five children to bring up, and no income. This feisty lady went down the village street and proposed to a gardener Fred Morton. They were together until Fanny's death in the late sixties. Suffering in the war was not limited to the battlefield.
