Herbert Fearn worked for the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society Ltd. in the London, City branch. He was appointed to the staff on 24 August 1914. He joined the Artists Rifles in 1915 and subsequently obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment, 8th Battalion. He was killed in action in Flanders a month after returning from leave. He was 20. The General Manager wrote that he was: “greatly esteemed and very popular with the Management and his colleagues, being an excellent clerk and possessing a charming personality.”
