Albert Henry Harfield died on 18th Sep aged 28. He was a Leading Stoker in the Royal Navy. He died as a result of being injured on board HMS Glatton in Dover Harbour on 16th Sep. An explosion caused a large fire on board which killed 60 men outright and 19 more died later of burns. The ship was then deliberately torpedoed in order to prevent an explosion in her main magazines that would have devastated the town of Dover. Albert is buried in Hook Churchyard, but there is a memorial to HMS Glatton and her crew in Woodlands Cemetery in Gillingham, Kent. Born at Turkey Island, Wickham, he was the son of George & Eliza Harfield, who in 1901 lived at Fleet End. In 1915 he married Annie Gardner and they had a son, George, who had died earlier in 1918 and with whom Albert shares a grave.
