Joseph was born in Thurlstone and was aged 23 when he enlisted in the 12th Btn York & and Lancs Regt. (The Sheffield Pals) at *****tone on the 8th September 1914, giving his occupation as ‘carter’. The *****tone Almanack recorded that “Pte J Naylor was in the first group to enlist from *****tone”. He was 5ft 3 1/8 ins tall, chest 34-37, of dark complexion, with grey eyes and brown hair. Religion: Wesleyan. He was granted permission to marry Lucy Billam at Rotherham Registry Office on 7th August 1917 and their daughter Josephine Mary was born on 18th Feb.
