George enlisted with the Candian Expeditionary Force on 26 January 1916 at Weyburn, Saskatchewan, and was trained at Camp Hughes, Manitoba, before being sent to Europe.

Whilst serving in France he is reported to have met his uncle, George Lyon Bartlett, who served with the 5th Seaforth Highlanders, in the area around Arras.
