William Moat (or Mowatt) Reid worked in the Glasgow Hand in Hand branch of the Commercial Union Assurance Company Ltd.  He enlisted as a Private in the Royal Field Artillery in May 1916 on reaching military age and in September 1916 he was transferred to the 8th Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) and was sent to France. He was killed by a sniper at Ypres, aged 20.
