It was my grandmother's intention when she gave me the medals in the 1980's, that we learn from the sad futility in this episode of history and never repeat the same mistakes again. However, history has taught us that despite such immense tragedy, the human memory is short, with the quick succession of WWII. We can but try.

Sid was my grandmother's brother. She would often tell us about the last time she saw him, when he woke her up and carried her down the stairs to say goodbye to her. I include here a picture of Sid, his medals and a postcard that was sent back to his direct family with a personal message on the back.  It would be nice to know who wrote the message.  In fact it would also be nice to hear back from anyone who has stories from relatives who may have known Sid.  With the internet I now know a lot more about the 8th Royal Berkshire Regiment and the battle of Loos.
