Born in Liverpool the second of four children he was reared in the Northwich area.  From the age of 10 he & his siblings were brought up by his father.  Enlisted into Cheshire Regt 21/5/1894 & served in South Africa.  Married Sarah Jameson in 1904 & set up home in Preesall  working as a Miner. Re-enlisted into Cheshire Regt 1914 when the youngest of his three children was just 2 months old. Survived gunshot wound in 1915 only to be killed the following year. His wife was left at the age of 36 to bring up the children on a pension of £1 8s 9d pw &, so far as I am aware, she never re-married.
