Norman was one of two children of George and Florence. George was a successful Mechanical Engineer who was able to educate both his son and daughter into their late teens. In 1911 the family had eleven other school children boarding with them including local London children and those from across the world including America and Russia. Norman studied at Emanuel School (Battersea).
On the day he died 11 officers and 320 ordinary ranks were killed when the battalion was fighting along the Vierstraat – Kemmel line to the South West of Ypres.
