I hardly know anything about my Great Uncle Percy. The family story I heard was that he died when running across a farm yard on an attack to capture Forenville a small town located south of Cambrai. I understand from reading the day's entry in the 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment War Diary that they came under heavy machine gun fire. In the end the capture on Forenville was successful, but at great cost to the lives of many who are now buried in Forenville Military cemetery including my Great Uncle. When my grandfather heard the news (Percy's brother) he was near Aleppo and wrote in his diary entry on December 20 1918 'Awful news from Dad in letter of November 19 that my beloved Brother PERCY IS DEAD oh! My God! The utter anguish of it all.' I think my Great Uncle was much loved. My father and mother visited his grave in the 1990s and we have photos of where he is buried.
