Gerard Arnold Dean (1896-1918 Alfreton) My grandmother’s cousin, Gerard Arnold Dean (1896-1918 Alfreton), was the only son of Joseph Herbert Dean (1867 Arnold) and Ann Agnes Burnell (1869 Spittlegate, Grantham). Gerard also had a sister Dora Dean (1893-1986 Alfreton). Grandma Florence Ann Dean (1887-1966 Farnsfield) was living at her brother George’s house in Alfreton in 1910 so she would have known Gerard. In 1911, aged fourteen, he was still at home in South Street, Greenhill Lane, Alfreton, with his parents and was working as an office boy at the iron works. (not far far away lived his uncle, Samuel Bailey Dean, Tommy Dean’s Dad, and he also worked at the iron works). Gerard would also have been well known throughout the wider family as his mother Ann Agnes Burnell (1869 Spittlegate, Grantham) was brought up living next door to his aunt Charlotte Britton nee Dean in Birchwood (near Riddings) and his uncle John James Burnell married his cousin Mary Ann Britton. He enlisted as number 241285 a Gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery,"A" Battery. 28th Brigade. He died of wounds on September 29th 1918 and is buried in grave IV. F. 5. BRIE BRITISH CEMETERY, France. He is also remembered on the war memorial outside the church on Church Street, Riddings, Derbyshire. Peter Milner 2014
