Born on Silk Street 27/04/1888 John Edward Sheard was KIA at the Somme 07/07/1916 at Contalmaison aged 28 years, having been wounded twice.He was a Corporal 3 1276 who enlisted 01/11/1914. His name appears on the Birkby Fartown Memorial  and he was the brother of Able seaman (served on HMS Tumult) Robert Henry (suicide at home 1920) and Joseph William (KIA Passendaele 09/10/1917) Their mother Mary Ann lived at 6 Blacker Road, Birkby.

Still remembered in the school in Huddersfield by the staff, pupils and wider community.
