Arthur Leonard Berwick (born 6th August 1897, Walworth, Southwark) was the youngest son of James and Sarah Berwick. He joined up to the Royal Field Artillery along with his elder brother William James Oscar. William (my grandfather), an R.F.A. Gunner, was recovering from a gas attack when he heard that R.F.A. Driver Arthur (#950764, 3rd Army, 5th Div, A Battery 15th Brigade) had died from wounds sustained at the Battle of Albert (2nd Battle of the Somme) on the 22nd August 1918, just 16 days after his 21st birthday and less than three months before the WW1 Armistice. Will returned to the front 'to avenge his little brother', subsequently suffered a gunshot wound, but survived. Arthur's war grave reference is IV.F.27 Bagneux British War Cemetery, Gezaincourt Somme and he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
