Thanks to the kindness of the Kinsale Historical Society, the loss of the SS Narragansett was commemorated on the centenary of its sinking, 16th March, 2017, at the memorial to the McCarthy brothers, Timothy and Mortimer, in that town. Both brothers were polar explorers - Timothy had taken part in Shackleton's expedition to the Antarctic in 1914-16, and had been in the crew of the 'James Caird' lifeboat that made the epic journey to South Georgia to get help for the remainder of the expedition, who were stranded on Elephant Island. On his return to the UK Timothy signed on as a member of the crew of the SS Narragansett; my Grandfather George Henry Wheeler was already on board as First Mate. After crossing to New York to load a cargo of lubricating oil, the ship was torpedoed by U44 off SW Ireland on its return voyage, with the loss of all hands. 100 years later, wreaths were laid in his home town of Kinsale to commemorate Timothy McCarthy, RNR, who had manned the gun on board, and also George Henry Wheeler, who was lost with him.
