Claud Norie Miller worked for the General Accident Fire and Life Assurance Corporation Ltd. in Canada. He was the eldest son of the company’s General Manager, Francis Norie Miller and was educated at Ardvreck, Crieff and Glenalmond College Perthshire. He joined General Accident on leaving school and after training at the head office and Paris branches he was appointed manager for Canada and later for the United States. He was also Vice President of the General Accident Insurance Company of Canada. On the outbreak of war he joined the Canadian troops and was then offered a commission in the British Army. He was transferred to the Army Service Corps Motor Transport Division and appointed to the Road Office for section of the Front in Egypt. His parents received a telegram that he was "missing presumed drowned" en route to Egypt when the SS Transylvania was torpedoed. He was 32.
