William Alpine Fraser, called Alpine, was a twin and one of 12 children born to my Great Grandparents, William and Marion Fraser. His unusual name, Alpine, came from the doctor who safelydeliverd Alpine and his twin sister. One time when he returned home on leave, his mother was shocked that his kilt was so full of mud, it stood up by itself. At the end of his last leave, he said to his younger brother, Robert, who saw him off at the station, that he knew he wouldn't be coming back. Robert named his son Ronald Alpine after his brother. And Ronald named his son, Cameron Alpine for this brave man.

Alpine was killed at High Wood on July 15th 1916 along with another 191 Glasgow Highlanders. On July 15th 2016 at 11am, my husband and I were honoured to attend, representing Alpine's family,  a memorial service arranged by the Glasgow Highlanders.. Other relatives attended as did many young cadets, to honour these men who gave their lives for us.  We also went to Thiepval where Alpine's name is etched on that monument.
