Eric was on H.M.S Orama when it was torpedoed by German submarine U-62, 217 miles off the Isles of Scilly.
US Destroyer Conyngham attempted to unsuccessfully ram the submarine.
The Orama was torpedoed in the number 3 hold at 17.55, by 20.00 the crew abandoned ship in lifeboats with the ship sinking by the head.
The ship finally sank at 21.00 on 19th October 1917.
