Francis Edwin Ward was my Grandmother's brother. She always called him **** and remembered him with great fondness. As a child I can remember her telling me that after Francis' death, the Salvation Army visited his parents and returned his cigarette case and signet ring. The signet ring had been a family present for Francis' 21st birthday, he had received it early because he was going away to fight. The Salvation Army arranged for Francis' parents to visit his grave in France. My Grandmother always said how much peace this brought to them. Francis lived in Winster Road Sheffield. He was 1 of 10 young men from this small street who never returned home from the War. My family still have the Widow's Penny, which was given to Francis' mother. My mother regularly polishes it and keeps it on show in her home as a small reminder of the Uncle she never knew. A small remembrance of a very ordinary young man from Yorkshire, who like so many made the ultimate sacrifice.
