Herbert Harry Middleton 300327 1st/5th Bn London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) I know so little about Herbert. He was my Great Uncle, but his brother Percy (my paternal grandfather) did not mention him, the pain must have been so great. When I began to look at our family's history 15 years ago, and his WW1 Plaque came to light, my father was amazed to learn of the uncle he didn't know he had. As we delved deeper we realised the family had known tragedy aplenty: Herbert was one of 12 children born to Henry Middleton and Mary Jane nee Cripps. Only 5 survived infancy. He was born in Buckinghamshire. In civilian life he was a warehouseman handling millinery, and lived in Walthamstow, London. He is commemorated on the Walthamstow War Memorial in UK and on the Thiepval Memorial in France
