Edward Hartney was born abt. 1897 in Limerick City to James Hartney, a pig dealer and Bridget Taylor, who came from a long line of tailors. Edward's father died when he was just 3 years of age. Before joining the 8th Battalion of the Royal Munster Fusilliers, Edward worked as a messenger boy. His family home was 2, Duggans Row, Limerick.

On September 1st 1913, his older brother Henry Hartney, a Gunner with the 96th Company of the Royal Garrison Artillery, was struck by a train while on duty and he died from his injuries at Dalmeny Station, Scotland. He was 23 years of age. Edward died 3 years later on the Western Front on July 1st  1916.

Edward and Henry were first cousins of my late grandmother Kathleen Taylor of Bedford Row, Limerick. May they R.I.P.
