2841 Private Jones T H (Tomas Huw) was one of 873 officers and men who died in WW1 (From February 1915 until August 1921 when the CWGC dictated a cut off point for determining War dead.)
The WG were formed on 26th February 1915 when the King authorised by Royal Warrant the creation of a Welsh Regiment of Foot Guards.
The Bn. arrived in France on the 7th August 1915 and did not leave until 11th March 1919.
2841 died of wounds received whilst in the line at Sailly-Saillisel . (Probably from shrapnel). I cannot be sure of this, but on the evening of the 4th March the POW and No. 2 Companies took over the front line under heavy shellfire that continued for the next two days. This involved heavy guns as well as field guns and trench mortars. He was probably evacuated to the Casualty Clearing Station at Grove Town.
In September 1916, the 34th and 2/2nd London Casualty Clearing Stations were established at this point, known to the troops as Grove Town, to deal with casualties from the Somme battlefields. They were moved in April 1917 and, except for a few burials in August and September 1918, the cemetery was closed. Grove Town Cemetery contains 1,395 burials.
On this day 8 other WG died. 6 were KIA 1, from sickness and Thomas DOW. A total of 15 WG are buried in this cemetery. All dying from wounds received between 17th September 1916 to 21st March 1917. In total the British Army suffered over 275 ‘death’ casualties on this day.
Thomas was born in St. Asaph and a native of Ty Newydd. He was 23 years of age at the time of his death and married to Anne. His parents were John Edward and Margaret.
