Perhaps

Perhaps one day I will see

Various birds gliding by me

But right now all I see

Are smoky grey grave stones mocking me.

Perhaps one day I will hear

The laughter of my brothers and sisters

But right now the screams of my

Comrades fill my ears.

Perhaps one day I will feel

The warmth of my soft as kitten slippers

But right now I feel

The devil’s disease - Trench foot.

War is like a no-mans’ land

No man is left standing

But I look to you my mother

For the strength to make it through

And one day I hope

I will be home with you.
